Sidewalk Assessment-Kalamazoo, Michigan

Wightman’s Landscape Architecture and GIS teams partnered with the City of Kalamazoo by providing an inventory and assessment of the sidewalks in the Central Business District (CBD) of the City.

With the goal of making the pedestrian system safe and accessible for all users, Wightman inventoried and rated the sidewalk network, crosswalks, ADA ramps, and street trees and located and rated all site furniture, litter receptacles, wayfinding signs, bike racks, and pedestrian lights, including electrical outlet location, if present. High-tech GPS equipment was used to capture accurate locations, attributes, and photographs of any sidewalk defect and issues that need to be addressed for safety or accessibility.

Wightman provided a non-motorized inventory and assessment that can be added to the City’s GIS system and a sidewalk assessment rating system that can be utilized for future projects.

“Helping the City of Kalamazoo assess their current sidewalk infrastructure and help them plan repairs and improvements for the future was a fun aspect of the job. Pedestrian safety is becoming a large part of civil engineering and roadway planning in general, so attention to detail was key.”
