Harbor Shores – The Hideaway Residential Development
St. Joseph / Benton Harbor, Michigan
As part of the multi-phase Harbor Shores redevelopment initiative, The Hideaway is a 59-lot residential neighborhood nestled along the Paw Paw River. Designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, the project incorporates eco-friendly design concepts from roadway to residence, creating a community that is both beautiful and sustainable.
Wightman partnered closely with the client to turn environmental challenges into design opportunities. Together, we developed narrow, cottage-style roadways with integrated rain gardens that manage stormwater naturally. These systems temporarily hold runoff during heavy rains and slowly release it to the adjacent river, reducing downstream flooding and improving water quality. The result is a development that functions efficiently while enhancing the local ecology and resident experience.
One of the project’s greatest challenges was the poor native soil conditions, which made traditional road construction unfeasible. Through collaboration and geotechnical analysis, Wightman designed an innovative road section using geotextile fabric, grid reinforcement, and a free-draining aggregate base paired with a perforated storm sewer system—a solution that ensured long-term durability and stability.
The site’s proximity to two county drains, adjacent wetlands, and the Paw Paw River added additional layers of complexity. Wightman worked hand-in-hand with regulatory agencies to amend an existing MDEQ/ACOE joint permit, rerouting and restoring the drains with native stone and plantings that cleanse stormwater and create the gentle sound of cascading water throughout the site.
Through thoughtful planning, technical creativity, and open collaboration, Wightman and the client delivered a resilient, environmentally sensitive neighborhood that reflects Harbor Shores’ vision for sustainable community development along Michigan’s shoreline.
