Berrien County Drain Commission Celebrates the Completion of the New Pinebrook Drain

Benton Harbor, Mich.—The Berrien County Drain Commission is pleased to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Pinebrook Drain on Tuesday, July 23 at 10:00 a.m. This significant infrastructure project marks a milestone in the County’s ongoing efforts to improve water management and environmental stewardship in the community.

The upgraded Pinebrook Drain is a simple but efficient system designed to move stormwater via storm basins, pipes, and swales to localized ponds which promote infiltration before outletting downstream. The system will efficiently manage stormwater runoff, reduce flooding risks, and protect local waterways. As communities grow and climate patterns change, effective drainage systems become increasingly vital for maintaining the health and safety of our environments and residents.

Drains play a crucial role in urban and rural settings alike. They are essential for flood prevention, good water quality, soil stabilization, and more. Proper drainage systems mitigate the risk of flooding by channeling excess rainwater away from streets, homes, and businesses. Effective drains, like the new Pinebrook drain, reduce pollution by preventing contaminants from entering local water bodies, thereby preserving aquatic ecosystems, and maintain soil stability by preventing erosion and ensuring that water is appropriately distributed across the landscape. While these benefits are often centralized to the neighborhoods and areas surrounding the drain, there is a greater benefit to the public at large. By managing wastewater and stormwater, drains reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and contribute to the overall health of the community.

The Pinebrook Drain project has been a collaborative effort involving the Berrien County Drain Commissioner, civil engineers from Wightman, and local stakeholders all committed to enhancing the community’s infrastructure. This modern drainage system not only addresses current water management needs but also anticipates future challenges posed by urban development and climate change.

"We are excited to unveil the new Pinebrook Drain, a testament to our commitment to sustainable water management and community resilience," said Christopher Quattrin, Berrien County Drain Commissioner. "This project represents a significant investment in our infrastructure, ensuring that our community remains safe and vibrant for generations to come."

"Our team enjoyed being a part of upgrading this system that was causing many issues for local residents. The project included multiple phases, and we were able to address problems in several areas of the drainage district. The overall system now manages the stormwater in a much more effective way," said Melanie Stanage, Project Manager at Wightman. "We are proud to contribute to a solution that will protect homes, businesses, and natural resources in St. Joseph."

The Berrien County Drain Commission invites all community members to join them for this momentous occasion at 754 Manitou, St. Joseph, at the new pond. Come learn about the innovative features of the new drain and celebrate this important step towards a safer and more sustainable future.
